THERAPY DOG TRAINING

A Therapy dog is a dog that visits nursing homes, schools, hospitals and disaster areas. They provide comfort by petting.

Therapy dogs do not have the same privileges as Service dogs.
Therapy dogs enter public places as invited. They are not allowed in Restaurants or other public places that do not allow dogs. Therapy dogs can be Read Dogs which means they assist children when reading.

Here at Starlite Academy we offer two 10 week programs.

  • First 6 weeks is learning basic obedience.  This training is one on one with you and your dog at Starlite Academy, once a week.
  • Basic Obedience consists of learning Heel, Sit, Down, Leave It, Wait and Up.
  • At the end of the 6 weeks the Canine Good Citizen test will be administered.
  • The next 4 weeks will be going to a Nursing home, once a week.

Program Two: $1,500.00

  • Your dog will be a resident at Starlite Academy for 6 weeks where our trainers will teach them basic obedience consisting of Heel, Sit, Down, Leave It, Wait and Hup.
  • Once a week for the next 4 weeks at Starlite Academy you will work with trainer and your dog on the basic obedience commands and take a trip to a Nursing home.
  • At the end of the 10 week program  the Canine Good Citizen test will be administered.

If your dog has gone through obedience training then one of our trainers will first have to perform an evaluation of the obedience commands.  If your dog was trained obedience with a halti collar, pinch collar or treat training they will most likely fail this evaluation.  Once we finish the evaluation we will customize the Therapy program and cost to fit your dog.
